Sometimes babies feel so bored inside the womb, that they just wanna come out sooner than you/doc plan to. Since babies are bosses of everything, they do come out and there is nothing much you can really do about that except face it like a champ. Preterm babies have extraordinary requirements when it comes to mother’s milk, as they are underdeveloped but sadly, that they are not old enough to feed themselves. Feeding them expressed breast milk is the only lifesaver here! If the mother unfortunately can’t lactate enough, human milk banks, though a relatively new concept in India, can come to rescue. The newest one on the block is the human milk bank at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Puducherry’s Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER). This will be a boon for premature babies!

Named Amudham Thaippal Maiyam’ (ATM), the bank will not only help in delivering much-needed nutrition faster to these preterm babies, but will also provide breastfeeding counselling to new and expecting mothers. Dr.S.C Parija , Director of JIPMER, a few days before the facility was inaugurated, quipped  “As 30% of 1,500 babies born per month in JIPMER are of low birth weight and mostly preterm, there is a strong need to establish a human breast milk bank at NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) to strengthen neonatal services and save preterm babies”.

He also added that such banks must be set up in all NICU facilities across the nation considering the complications associated with formula feeding of underweight and tiny preterm babies who cannot be breastfed till they are six months old. “If mother’s milk is unavailable or insufficient, the next option is to use pasteurized donor human milk,” he said.

We think, it’s a truly amazing move by JIPMER , that will surely come to the rescue of many babies, like those of  adoptive mothers or are unable to feed for unavoidable reasons.
