Congratulations, you could be expecting already! Even if you don’t know for sure yet. Well, allow us to take you through this road to discovering your very first pregnancy…

Technically, week 1 of your pregnancy begins with the first day of your menstrual cycle. You will have a period which lasts for 3-5 days and by the end of this week, your uterus ( your baby’s nest once you conceive) will be completely cleansed and ready in anticipation of your little one.

It is most unlikely that you will get pregnant at this time as the uterus does not have a lining ready to hold the baby and the ovary is yet to release an egg. By day seven, your body will start producing hormones; oestrogen and progesterone in higher quantities. These hormones  allow the uterus to form a thick and lush lining in readiness for a potential fertilized egg (the genesis of your baby starts here).

You may not realise you are pregnant yet at this stage. However, your doctor will consider the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) as the beginning of the month that you may actually get pregnant.

Physical Development

No outward physical changes happen during this week, but a lot happens inside you. If you are planning a pregnancy then make sure that you are taking folic acid supplements and prenatal vitamins.

Emotional Changes

At this stage, you may feel nothing cognizable about your pregnancy.

Signs and Symptoms

There’s still a while to go till you experience definite signs of pregnancy. At this stage, you may just feel anticipation building up if you’re trying to conceive.

Red Flags

If you are already planning a baby, stay away from alcohol, cigarettes and other illegal drugs as these have detrimental effects on you and your baby in the first three months of pregnancy.

*If you’re already on some medication, you must ask your doctor whether you need to discontinue or change the prescribed medicines.

Old Wives’ tales

It is very difficult to actually plan the sex of your baby. You may have heard that someone is using the Chinese Calendar or eating particular foods to get a baby boy or girl. These methods are neither scientific nor very reliable.
