It was indeed a pleasure to attend Mother's day event organized by Surya Hospitals along with Striveda & Babychakra. The event were all about Breastfeeding and bonding, We had 4 panelist..
Dr.Dhrupti Dedhia - Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology, Surya Hospitals, SantaCruz
Dr.Mukund Shirloka - Consultant Paediatric Intensive care, Surya Hospitals, SantaCruz
Ms.Perina Joshi - Consultant Nutritionist, Surya Hospitals, SantaCruz
Naiyya Saggi - Founder CEO Babychakra
The panelist spoke about breastfeeding and emotional bonding, There were lot of questions and they were all answered with great patience. Here is a jist of things discussed by each panelist which will be very use full for the pregnant mothers , new moms and the breastfeeding mothers.;
Dr.Dhrupti Dedhia - Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology:; When a women get pregnant they are on cloud nine, they are more concerned about the way of delivering, Csection or normal vaginal delivery and many think as soon as they deliver a miracle will happen and the milk will start flowing. Irony is NO, It takes time for the mother to produce milk. Initially it will be in drops or nothing,; Only as the baby latches and sucks milk will be produced. One needs to be prepared while being pregnant, if there is any crack on the nipples or sore breast it has to be reported to the gynecologist and proper healing should be there.;
She also added breastfeeding is not easy , not like shown in the movies or pictures where it will be like orgasm. It's difficult for many women. So one needs to be prepared well but as they journey goes they will find it easy, If colostrum is leaking before delivery it can be pumped and refrigerated and used after delivery.; Dr. Dhrupti said give your best,; try all the methods and seek help , but if it doesn't work there is nothing to be guilty of.
Dr.Mukund Shirloka - Consultant Paediatric Intensive : Recommended 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding,; Breastmilk has all the nutrients required and there is absolutely no need of any substitute like formula. The constant things new moms will hear are 1. Your milk is not enough 2. It's very watery 3. start early weaning.; He recommended weaning has to be done only by 6 months or by 5.5 months and not before that. Chances of breastfeeding babies being colicky is rare but after every feed burping should be given . Holding the babies in upright position for 15 mins is recommended for proper burping.;
When asked " What happens to the breast milk after 6 months as most Paediatricians says it turns just water? " Dr. Mukund said The nutrients in breast milk never subsides as long as we feed the baby but weaning(Solids) has to be started after 6 months. He also pointed out WHO world health organization recommends 2 years of breastfeeding, Hence do not wean the baby early from breastfeeding. He pointed out in the initial stage if there is any latching issue or mother is not producing milk " Spoon and bowl " should be used and not "Bottles", Because it will create nipple confusion and babies will prefer the easiest method that is drinking from Bottle.;
Ms.Perina Joshi - Consultant Nutritionist : She broke lot of myths around eating after delivering, If we eat palak baby will not poop green. Our food got no connection to their gas or colic pain. In the initial stage dals, lentils are avoided because the mother will have gas and go through discomfort,; She will never pass the gas to the baby . Our digestive system is way down , our stomach is in the middle and our breast on top, So our food, our gas will not pass through the breast.
She also pointed out strong flavoured foods like onions and garlic does cause milk to have a strong flavor and few babies might not like it in their milk,; In such cases we can avoid. Apart from that nothing has to be avoided,; keeping ourselves hydrated during breastfeeding is the most important thing. Eat peacefully and feed peacefully is all she suggested.
Naiyya Saggi: Our founder shared her experience as a new mother,; She pointed out how support system is very important in Breastfeeding. Mother should never judged, family will be the backbone and one has to ask directly that she needs help rather than thinking I can do everything on my own. She also pointed out how Babychakra mothers are helping each other when in it comes to breastfeeding hurdles and emotional support. She was thankful to the Babychakra mother who gave her breast pump when Naiyya needed it at the hospital.;
Naiyya has a busy schedule yet she said she is still breastfeeding her 3 months old daughter.;
Zandu has come up with Striveda Shathavari (asparagus) powder in chocolate flavor,; Shathavari helps in increasing the milk supply and maintain it. Recommends for new mothers and breastfeeding mothers.
