Lesson 21 Administration of medicines to a refluxing baby.

How to administer medicines to a refluxing baby?

Administering medicines to babies is a tough task. It needs a lot of patience and care. Most babies vomit out medicines or just refuse to gulp those liquids down the throat.

For multivitamins you can change the brand of the medicine by consulting your treating pediatrician; as there are many over the counter multivitamin drops and syrups for babies and decide on a drop or syrup that tastes good to the baby so that thr baby accepts it easily without a fuss.

But for antibiotics and other drugs we have no option. And these are given only when the baby is ill. Due to the illness baby will be cranky and unco-operative but patience and high determination is the key.

To start with Feed the baby only half of the total feed amount.

Burp the baby for 5 to 10 minutes

Wait for 15 to 20 minutes and then feed the medicines with a dropper or paladei or spoon according to your convinience.

With dropper you can administer the syrup deep in the mouth. Keep the bulb of the dropper pressed until you talk out the dropper from the mouth completely otherwise the admisinistered syrup will also come back into the dropper out of the mouth.

With the spoon you can readminister the drugs thrown out of the angles of the mouth while giving the medicine. But introduce the spoon completely into the mouth and wait for the baby to gulp it down before taking the spoon out of the mouth.

Give a few sips of water if required

Again Burp the baby for 5 to 10 minutes.

Wait for 20 more minutes and feed the rest of the food of required.

Burp the baby again and put to sleep.
