Hello friends, I'm Prisha, mom to twin boys who are now 4 years old. I'm also a blogger and blog at www.mummasaurus.com Just 3 weeks back my entire world turned upside down when my child got diagnosed with autism. Now to share the background, my sons, A and B, A was always extremely active physically and B was somewhat quieter; He always appeared very moody. So some days he will be very active and jumping and playing and some days he will just lie down and keep playing with his cars. Some days he will listen to everything and some days he will throw a bad temper tantrum for illogical or very irrelevant things. His speech wasn't fully developed even at 4 years of age and that always scared me. Having completed my degree in Counseling Psychology, I knew something definitely was 'off' about him. But my husband never agreed. He thought I was over thinking and I tried a lot to convince him. I told him let's see someone; all they will say is your son is fine, then why not go and seek an opinion. We kept having this discussion for over a year. My hunch kept getting stronger but eventually we only decided to go to a speech therapist.; Being a middle class family we had to think many times before we spend thousands and thousands on expensive tests. So while looking for recommendations for a speech therapist I stumbled upon an occupational therapist who said I should meet her first. We met her, she took two hours to take the detailed history of symptoms. While I was talking to her I could feel that a bad news is going to come, and it did. She said my child is on the autism spectrum, and she immediately put him on a no wheat and no milk products diet. My son does not eat rice, and does not drink milk. But his go to food option was always the dahi and parantha. So for the first week when he was diagnosed we were strictly advised to keep him on the diet, and to give zero screen time. Before this my kids were watching TV 4-5 hours a day. I work from home and if they did not watch TV they would want to be with me. This was a mistake. But in that one week I Google and spoke to people a lot and tried figure out a developmental pediatrician; she met my son, did the tests and confirmed THAT HE IS NOT IN THE AUTISM SPECTRUM. Most of his problems were just a severe deficiency of Vitamin D So this is my story of how Autism touched my life.

@5b61fbe551c9b438dddaa20d ; hugs to u .. u being from the same background could handle urself and be guided well.. but it's a sad situation otherwise. Where parents get flown away with anything that is said without actually putting in head to it. Also I feel anything's that discussed much or around is a factor that creates doubt in all parents. Eg. When the movie Taare Zameen par came.. all parents by and large judged their kids on dyslexia.

Occupational therapists are not entitled to diagnose autism. Even as a speech therapist we always take opinion of a clinical psychologist before making a diagnosis.

Thank goodness! Blessings to the kid and Hugs to you Prisha! I can't even imagine how difficult it is for a parent especially a MOM to go through even a false alarm like that! And more for the kid who has to go through restrictions..More power to both of you! Well, happy that you met the developmental pd ..
