Piles are swollen blood vessels. They come up in the rectum during pregnancy due to the growing weight of the uterus as it presses against the bowels. Also if you get constipated and have to strain to pass motions it can cause them to get swollen. For women who have a vaginal birth the pushing can cause the blood vessels to swell.
