#festivalsandpuja#dussehra A thing or two to know and learn about Ravana!! We are celebrating Dussehra today. This festival marks the victory of good over evil and teaches us that when a mighty king like Ravana did wrong by kidnapping Maa Sita, Lord Rama's wife and was indulged in many other bad deeds he was killed. Effigies of Ravana are burnt at Ramleela Pandals at many places, giving a message of burning the evil and bad and making way for the good. But there are few countries like Sri Lanka, Bali and some other places in Indonesia and even in India where Ravana is worshiped. Even in Meerut in India, which is considered Ravanas in - laws place (Mandodari, his wife belonged to this place) Ravanas effigies are not burn. Ravana was one of the most learned scholar of his era. Calling him a Mahapandit is not an exaggeration. Even Lord Rama's is said to have called him a very learned man. Born in a kul of sages from paternal side and demons from maternal side, he knew all 4 Vedas, 6 shastras (his ten heads are a demonstration of knowing these 10 scriptures) and could also sing and play Veena. He could sing Samveda very well. Not only this, Ravana is known to be an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and had even done hard pennance many times to please Shiva and Brahma and got many of his wishes fulfilled from them. He was also a warrior and at one point of time ruled over the three world's, had control on all devtas and nakshatra and was the richest man in the universe. Even today no one has as much wealth as he had. He controlled Kuber (Lord of wealth), who was also his step brother. It is said in Ramayana that when Ravana and Mandodari enjoyed a musical or dance performance, sitting at the highest terrace in Lanka, and moved their heads, the Mani's in their crown lighted up a part of the Indian Ocean!! Legend says that there was a time when Ravana was so powerful that he could even order the sun to rise and set as per his wish. Also as a king he was a good ruler and under him even the poorest of the poor people in Lanka fluorished and ate and drank in vessels made of Gold!! So why did such a great king, meet this end and even today he is known as an epitome of bad and evil. Greed and pride were two major vices that lead to Ravanas doom. His want to control and rule any and everything on which he set his eyes (by hook or by crook) and his overconfidence, wherein he thought that beings like humans, vanars and bears can never kill him lead to his defeat at the hands of Lord Rama. It was not him who had earned the nectar (Amrit) for himself but it was Mandodari, his wife who had got it for him after lot of struggle and when she, his greatest well wisher and many others who were on his side, warned and even pleaded him to not get into a fight with Lord Rama, who was actually Lord Vishnu, Ravana didn't listen. Once powerful and undefeatable, he indulged in bad karma and played with the dignity of ladies who were weaker than him. His pride made him throw away his brother, Vibhishan out of his kingdom and he even sacrificed his son Megnath and brother Kumbhkarans life in trying to prove his supremacy.
But when death was near him, Lord Rama send Laxman to learn a thing or two from Ravana and his 3 main teachings were: 1. Try to do a good deed as soon as possible and try delaying a bad thing from happening as much as you can.
2. Never consider anyone weaker than you, especially your enemies. Even a small thing can create havoc.
3. A life changing secret of yours should never be shared with anyone, even your closets people should not know it. Ravanas story teaches us that however powerful, wealthy or learned one may be, greed, pride, wrong doings and bad Karma will always be met with disaster and doom.
For me since childhood, Ravana was just an evil demon who every Dussehra was burnt with a fanfare and right so, his deeds were such but later when I read a lot about him in Ramayana and other literature, I felt that there was something which we all can learn from him..after all till date legends claim that this world has not seen a man as learned as him...it was his bad karma, pride, ego and greed that brought his downfall. So this Dussehra lets burn all the evil vices in us and make way for good!!
