It is absolutely a parent's prerogative. Co-sleeping fosters bonding while making them sleep independently makes them self-confident in the long run. I co-slept with y baby till he was 10 months and them transitioned him to the cot. If he wakes up at night and wants to sleep with us, we welcome him with open arms. The idea is to be flexible.

where the baby sleeps should be decided on what you prefer. personally, i feel co-sleeping, you sleeping with baby is the best, because it is super for bonding and nursing for baby and you. but i have never placed baby between hubby and me, just took precautions for the empty side of baby. that way, baby sleeps with me, and i don't have to be tensed about us rolling in to baby. if you want baby to sleep independently, you can opt for a cot.
