During pregnancy the hormone relaxin tends to make your gums relax which leads to the build up of plaque and tartar which can cause gum disease. Gum disease can cause pre term contractions. Hence it is suggested that all pregnant women should have a dental check up and clean up in the second trimester. Gums becoming spongy and sensitive are normal during pregnancy but this added precaution can be taken.
