Most of us are aware of the story of Holi where in the devil king Hiranyakashyap was so arrogant that he wanted everyone to pray to him only and consider him their God. His son, Prahlad was an ardent Vishnu devotee and on defying his orders he had punished him in several ways. The final one was to kill him on a pyre in Holika's(his sister's) lap. But he couldn't, instead Holika got burnt.
But do you know why was Hiranyakashyap so arrogant and how he got killed???
Hiranyakashyap had a blessing that, "na zameen par na aasmaan me..na din me na raat me...na manushya na pashu nobody could kill him"...so he considered himself immortal.
When Hiranyakashyap had committed enough sins, Lord Vishnu appeared in Narsimha avtaar (niether human not animal)...at a time when day was ending and night was starting (na din na raat) and placed Hiranyakashyap on his lap (na zameen na aasmaan) and killed him!!
