Have you noticed most of us worship little Krishna and not the mature one who is the king of Dwarka? We even have idols of young Krishna only at our houses. And like me, many other moms secretly wish their child to be like Krishna particularly. Right?
Little Krishna is a naughty, innocent, charming and loving kid. At the same time, he is so fearless that he can fight demons all alone. He is fun-loving and brave. He knows the magic to attract people towards himself. He is a perfect kid who is the apple of the eyes of the whole community. And this is why like a custom, mothers recite Krishna stories to their young children. After all, little Krishna's naughtiness and mischievous ways strike a chord with young kids. Krishna thus becomes the favorite god of kids. Because of the same reason, Janmashtmi is perhaps the only festival with which every child can connect. It has become the norm to dress up young children as Lord Krishna and Radha around Janmashtmi. And this makes kids appreciate the festival even more.
When Vibhu was 3, I thought Janmashtami was the perfect opportunity to tell him tales from our ancient scriptures, the story of Krishna. However, when I was phrasing the whole story in a language that my 3-year-old could understand, I found the story little heavy for a young kid. There are a lot of happenings in Krishna birth story that I found difficult to explain him. However, I decided to dilute it a bit and recite to Vibhu. As an inquisitive kid, he was ready with numbers of questions as I concluded the story. "Why Krishna's parents were in Jail?", "How Vashudev swam the river taking little Krishna?" "Why he took anyone else's baby?" and many more. I was clueless about how to answer his valid questions!
After much brainstorming, I decided to break the story. I started with a simple childbirth story which happens in Gokul. And every year I extend my story by adding more events and episodes. In the last 3 years, we have reached a point where my 5-year-old understands who kept Vasudev and Devki in jail, why Vasudev exchanged Krishna with a girl child and how Krishna got his real parents free from imprisonment. I will be continuing the same way for the coming few years. I will keep on adding more phases of Krishna's life. Soon my son will be able to completely understand the happenings and purposes.
Janmashtami used to be Krishna's birthday for Vibhu, but this year he himself is calling it "Janmashtami". Yesterday, I took him shopping and we bought things that we will use to decorate the Jhaki at our house. We both are super excited!
