question
In continuation to my previous post, pls check the below link, I want to share my thoughts on #GenderIdentity & #GenderEquality .

I had received a notice from Nemit's school regarding #Janmashtami celebrations at school tomorrow & they had clearly mentioned to dress up girls as #Radha & boys as #Krishna . Now this means that our society and environment plays a big role in defining gender roles even for the small kids who have no idea about gender.
Gender Identity and Gender Equality are 2 very different terms yet somewhat related. We see many parents talking about gender equality but the same parents have no idea about gender identity.
Children's concept of gender develops around the age of 3-5 which could be influenced by many factors & also through their own understanding.
"We can determine the sex of a child but not the gender"
I strongly feel that gender identification should be left on the kids themselves. And for that matter I have decided to let Nemit choose on his own what he wants to dress up like, Radha or Krishna.
If a 2 year old can have a preference in what to wear daily & can choose his own clothes, he can choose how he would like to get dressed up for a special occasion too.
I will be showing him pictures of Radha & Krishna & let him decide on his own.
We, as parents can only help our kids understand their inclination towards a particular gender irrespective of their sex & can't impose what we feel is right.
Why is it that a girl feels proud if she could wear a pant or shorts just like a boy whereas a boy feels offended if he's been asked to wear a dress or a girl's attire? Many times such things are not in our minds in fact are imposed onto us by the society.
Hence, ignoring what the society expects from us I will guide my son to have his own understanding of things by allowing him the opportunities to explore different gender roles.
I am trying to raise my kid as a kid neither as a boy nor as a girl. Let them be free and enjoy their childhood.

Cent percent agreed! Well written and powerfully expresssed. As parents can only gift the child with this right to choose his/her gender in an unbiased way.
