An inverted nipple is a condition in which the nipple is pulled inward into the breast instead of pointing outward.
How do I know if my nipples are flat or inverted? It's as easy as one-two-squeeze. Simply place your fingers on the edge of the areola (the dark area around the nipple) and compress it lightly. If the nipple protrudes forward, you've got nothing to worry about.
What can cause inverted nipples? Nipple retraction can be a congenital (present at birth) condition as a normal variant in some women. In other cases, it may arise as a result of disease or trauma. Any condition that causes inflammation or scarring of the tissues behind the nipple may cause the nipple to pull inward.
Do nipple shields help with latching? Using a Nipple Shield with Guidance Learning to breastfeed with a nipple shield should be a temporary solution to your baby's latching issues. As your baby gains strength and becomes able to latch and feed without assistance, you can put the nipple shield away.
Remember that babies BREASTfeed, not NIPPLEfeed. As long as your baby can take a good portion of your breast into their mouth (baby's mouth and gums should bypass the nipple entirely and latch on to the areola), most types of flat or inverted nipples will not cause problems with breastfeeding. #yaachustories#generalinfo#allaboutbreastfeeding#invertednipple#BBCreatorsClub
