Kottarakkara Thampuran, who was saddened by his childlessness, promised Perundachan that if he had a son, he would cover the Unni Ganga with Unniyappam. When Unni was born, he was unable to cover the Ganapathi despite how much Unniyappam was. Saddened Thampuran prayed to Lord Ganesha to make Unniyappam from dawn to sunset. Udayastamaya Pooja started from then on. These days it is only for those who make the offer.
Kottarakkara Temple is a Shiva temple. But it is for the reputed god Ganapati. During the construction of the Shiv temple in West Pattikkara, when the daily work began, Vigneshwara was worshiped in the form of Ganapathi Kodi in the adjoining Pavin Tree. By the time the temple was finished, the pavilion had become a magnificent Ganpati idol. Perunthachan wanted to be installed there, but the authorities did not yield. When he reached the East Temple, Peruntachan expressed his wish to the local authority. He agreed. It is the idol of Peruntachan himself who set up south facing the sanctum sanctorum and is still standing as a temple of blessings for the devotees. The festival begins with Lord Shiva. Shivaratri is the main festival of Kumbh. Vinayakachaturthi, Ayilyam-makam, Navaratri, Pratishadham, Thaipuyam, Vishu and Medathiruvaradi are also notable.
