✨The attention span for toddlers✨

"In my mind, I used to think how some kids shown on social media are engaged in activities/ independent play for such long periods without getting distracted. So, I did a Lil research to see if I’m missing something or what can I change to make improvements.

To begin with, a few seconds of video never tells the entire story. Never fall for it. Child development experts say it’s normal to have those distractions. The average attention span of a toddler is 2 -5 mins per year of age. So two yr old will be able to focus for 4 - 10 mins on a task or might be more.

It also depends upon the level of distraction, interest in the activity, sleep, hunger etc. I’m sharing what changes worked for us to see the improved concentration.

☀️ We prepared an environment that was very minimalist and distraction-free.

☀️ The space set was done with limited options and materials.

☀️ Established a routine that works for us and sticking to it. Even toddlers thrive with routine as long as we keep their interests and needs in mind while setting up a rhythm.

☀️ Practised modelling concentration. Modelling works the best with toddlers. Monkey see Monkey do!

☀️ Choosing age-appropriate activities and books. It holds the attention for a longer time frame cuz it’s all their favs.

☀️ Tried helping her without interrupting. Jumping in to help makes a gap in learning and it hinders independent play.

☀️ Letting her lead the play or activity and just by being present around with silent observation.

☀️ Physical activities, outdoor times and nature play also helped . Her current obsession is non stop bug watching.

☀️ By stopping overpraising and pointing out the errors. We’re still working on this though! Trying to give more feedbacks rather than Yays!

☀️ Setting doable activities is such a great way to taste small wins.

Things we did wrong,

⚡️Provided activities that were generalized and not age-appropriate.

⚡️Too much praising.

⚡️By not observing her interests closely.

⚡️Provided too many options and an environment with a lot of distractions.
