Types of books for Babies / Toddlers | Age based categories
.
.
There is no particular age to start books for babies. One can start as early as 6-7 months but do not expect them to read or look at it with interest in the first go or even till months to come
.
.
Just let them see, explore and feel the books. Let me tell you , it's a time consuming excercise and depends on kids to kids. Don't loose hope and don't force them.
.
.
It is important that one is aware of basic categorisation of books and types of books when set to purchase them. Here I present you a rough idea on types of books based on age of kids.
.
.
1. New Borns :
.
Black and white books , High contrast image (bold images), Rhyming text book.
.
.
2. Older Babies (>6 months) : .
- Board Books : These are laminated cardboard pages book. They are sturdy, have rounded edges (so that babies don't hurt their mouth while chewing), doesn't damage on pulling and tossing of books
.
.
- Activity Books : These can be "peek-a-boo" , hidden surprises book. These books encourage exploration. These can include touch and feel books, play books, popups, lift the flap etc.
.
.
3. Toddler Books : .
- Picture Books : These are books with colourful evident pictures, elaborate plot than board book. Subjects can range from ABC's to animal, feelings to favourite character
.
.
- Bedtime Books : These are bedtime reading with mom/ dad kind, these books have an interactive experience like lift-the-flap and touch and feel books. .
.
They include educational benefits too. Books like counting/ abc's , colours and shapes fall in this category. Paperback books can be introduced as the toddler is now aware of the concept of books and reading and is less likely to put it in mouth
.

This is a very rough and basic idea on books available for babies and toddlers. Hope you find it useful 😍
