We meet plenty of people who in our day to day lives but there are a few people who leave you inspired with how they've and are living theirs. @sonam patel and Champion Nishu Patel are one such duo. I am ever so lucky to have had the opportunity of getting to know them better. Thanks @babychakra and Asha Chaudhry Their journey has left me teary eyed and truly inspired! So here I am sharing my #momversation with our lovely @sonam Patel
Sumira: How would you describe the Sonam before mommyhood?
Sonam: Life is so unpredictable I must say. Before mommyhood life used to b carefree. Movies, hanging out with friends, dinners and lunch outside, everything was so different from now. And yes a good sleep. Oh gosh... Sleeping was like a celebration for me. I slept whenever I was bored, whenever I was stressed, whenever I had no work, whenever I was too happy although that happiness didn't let me sleep. But then life said "Picture abi baaki h mere dost, aage aage dekho hota hai kya" 😀
Sumira: How would you describe Sonam the mommy? Sonam: Someone said Motherhood is as crazy as circumnavigating the world without a map but oh what a journey! And this is so true. You don't know how to deal with a child or raise him. But you learn the best way slowly. After motherhood I have become more sensible, more responsible and more mature. Now the day begins when my child wakes up and ends with his last feed. The whole day revolves around him. Now his happiness is what makes me happy. His irritation is what tenses me. Overall this little tiny guy has dominated my life. 😄
Sumira: What hurdles have you faced in momhood? Sonam: It has always been a roller coaster ride from the beginning itself. Nisham came and spread so much of happiness. After the third day the tragedy began. Calcium level went low, he had an infection and jaundice. He was shifted to NICU. These moments broke us. He didn't open his eyes for several days. And when he did, we could see a white spot - it was said to be bilateral cataract. His ears, brain, heart, everything was checked. And a PDA (hole) was found in his heart. These things were due to a Rubella infection.
He went through eye surgery when he was 3 months old. It was really tough seeing your child in so much of pain and suffering. And he's yet to go through the heart surgery. His growth was retarded. Each day passed like a nightmare. On new year eve he was in NICU. His feeds were stopped. Every time we sat to eat we had tears in our eyes thinking we are eating while his feeding is stopped. Our hands trembled whenever we had a call from the hospital. Thank God those days are gone. I just wish that no one goes through all this.
Sumira: What's the next course of medical treatment for Nishu? Sonam: Next he has to go through heart surgery which is scheduled on September 7th. I just hope everything goes well. And hopefully this is the last surgery he has to go through. We need lots and lots of blessings and support from all of you.
Sumira: How has your husband dealt with Nishu’s illness? Sonam: Being a parent means learning about the strengths you didn't know you had and dealing with fears you didn't know existed. My husband is a very emotional person. I have seen him in tears many a time. It was quite difficult for him to accept this. But every time he showed himself to be the strongest. He is our source of strength. Whenever he was low I had to become strong and act like everything is fine. Whenever I was low he was my pillar. We have been each other's support during every difficult moment.
Sumira: What is your positivity mantra? Sonam: Honestly speaking, we broke many times. It's not possible to remain strong always in such circumstances. But the only thing which kept us going was Nishu. He came out of every thing like a warrior. Then we realised that if a small child can fight so bravely why can't we? We have seen that he laughs whenever we laugh! So it was our positivity that would affect him. We just have one positive mantra and that's Nishu himself!
Sumira: What part of the day does Nishu enjoy the most? Sonam: Nishu is a happy child. He plays on his own. He enjoys punching his toys. He enjoys cuddles, loves it if someone makes him jump. He enjoys bathing the most. Crying Nishu can turn into Laughing Nishu if made to bathe! He also loves car rides. We are busy making happy memories together J.
Sumira: What do your husband and Nishu do to bond? Sonam: Hubby goes to office at 10 a.m. Before that he plays with him. After coming back he spends time with him till he sleeps. On weekends I leave them together and get a good nap. He feeds him, puts him to sleep, plays with him and they seem so lost in each other. Daddy does everything from changing diapers to putting baby to sleep and this way they bond.
Sumira: What is the one thing that you really want Nisham to learn when he grows up? Sonam: Nishu's dad is fond of music and he really wants him to learn music - it completely depends on Nishu whether he wants to learn or not! I just want him to respect everyone. I want him to be a compassionate and loving person. And most importantly, I want him to learn all household chores too!
Sumira: What message do you have for all the mothers and expecting mothers out there? Sonam: I would say motherhood is a beautiful phase. No matter what the situation is, be strong. Your strength is your child's strength. Don't waste time in lamenting over issues, forget them instead, be involved with your baby and make beautiful memories. Motherhood can give you so much of power. Never lose hope and always follow your motherly instincts. Motherhood is the most challenging as well as the most satisfying vocation in this world.
Sumira: What do you like about BabyChakra? Sonam: Babychakra is a life saviour. The best community where we can see sisterhood. Anyone can share anything without the fear of being judged and will be supported. I personally have found so much of emotional support here. We are all from different parts of country but the string of motherhood has tied us so closely. We laugh together and we share our pains together. Kudos to the BabyChakra team and all the moms. You all are doing a great job together.
