having problem with breastfeeding ...mine is 3 days baby...not able to feed baby because of small nipple. .baby is not able to suck and now we are feeding bottle milk ...but it's not good for baby's health..what should i do now ?.

Sheeba Vijesh

there will never be an issue due to small nipple. ditch that bottle first, or baby will never latch. use spoon and vati instead. pinch the nipple and areola and pull forward by using the forefjnger and middle finger in scissor like hold and give in baby's mouth. it will take a bit of practise, but you can do it! baby does not latch on nipple alone, you have to give the darker part surrounding it as well... do let us know if it worked out for you...

I tried but it's not worked

my doc suggested me for breast pump...is it safe for baby ?

Sheeba Vijesh

breast pump is fully safe, but as said before, feed with vati and spoon.. did you consult a lactation specialist? that would help you...

hey ashwini, very good advice here. also try different positions and check. I had flat nipples so the normal cradle position never worked for me. I had to use the football hold. so you keep the baby on a pillow with the baby facing you and you support the baby's back from the arm opposite the breast and you pinch the nipple and the areola with the fingers of the other hand. also when you have bath, you squeeze the nipples and clean them. sometimes a clogged duct could also make it difficult for the baby to suckle. keep feeding as much as possible, slowly the baby will be able to suck well. don't give up just yet :*

it takes practice and patience for the baby to latch correctly.... it took me 2 months to completely breastfeed my baby... lately i ised to express milk and gave by spoon...i have flat nipples and breast heavy too so it is always difficult for me to latch my baby....All i would say is keep trying...... soon u both will get comfortable....

I faced the same problem during first 4 days. my gynac suggested me to buy a feeder nipple and hold it on your areola. then try your baby to suck your breast milk through that nipple. due to the suction baby will be able to suck out milk and also the shape of your nipple will be formed after regular practice.  believe me it worked for me in 10 12 days only. now my lill one is a month old n he is able to take my breast milk directly. please try it.

Apply sugary water on your nipples and try to feed baby... this worked for my co-sister

Akansha Sharma

don't worry..the more you will try to latch your baby ..sooner baby would be able to learn..you have to bit patient ...keep your babies head little elevated while feeding ...you can keep your hand beneath the babies head and keep a pillow or cushion under your leg to keep it elevated..keep on trying..baby will learn soon..happy parenting

these things helped me with Madela calma nipple and Ardo breast pump....mine were also very small....used nipple puller before every feed and Ardo cream for cracked and sore nipples....in the beginning around 10 days went horrible due to nipple shield I used as per nurse....she refused my nipples directly....but with calma nipple she came back to direct feed....and after a month no turning back... I'm still feeding her and planning to do till 2years Ashwini NP

hi Ashwini , i had the same inverted nipple problem.. use nipple shield in few days slowly help your baby to suck without nipple shield.. it will be fine ..also massage everyday with oil and pull the nipples out..even if you express milk with pump the nipples will be out and fit for feeding

Rashmi Gupta

sent u the procedure in chat
