I am 16 weeks pregnant and I noticed vaginal discharge (little) and few drops of blood. I immediately had a sonography which says that placenta is significantly ying low and it is seen reaching internal os. I have consulted my doctor and she advised me for complete bed rest. I want to know whether it is normal and it will be okay soon by doing bedrest? Any advice which can help me to get the baby in the normal position?

The baby is in the normal position. The placenta is low lying and covering the mouth of the uterus. The placenta is the organ which supports the baby by providing it nutrition and oxygen while in the womb. If it is low lying you may experience spotting. Bed rest is advisable so as not to create a jerky environment. If the placenta is only low lying it will move gradually as the uterus grows. Generally should be OK by week 24 when you can have another scan to check. It it covers the internal os which is the mouth of the uterus then it can stay there till birth.

a low lying placenta is a common finding early on. in majority of cases the placenta will move upwards as the uterus expands in size as pregnancy progresses. a repeat scan will show this. in few the placenta will continue to remain low. there is nothing for you to do to make the placenta move. rest for now.

Thank you for your advice. It helps a lot.

when I was 8 wks I also had noticed bleeding. My gyn prescribed me progesterone. I did bed rest for 2 months. now my baby is one and half month.

ok. so it seems to be normal. Thanks
