Q:

Way before pregnancy, i used to get excruciating pain in my legs as if its getting pulled(it feels like its coming from the nerves getting pulled). I was prescribed calcium tablets with Vit. E and the pain stopped for a few days, but returned again. It finally stopped when I took homeo. This happened atleast 2-3 years ago. But 2 days ago it has started again. Its getting unbearable today. Is it because of breastfeeding? Any suggestions?

Dr. Shilpitha Shanthappa

hello sheeba...
Your symptoms are like DVT or els sciatica... But as you said- you were relieved for some months and again its reccuring, it might be because of c-sec or BF... If BF is the cause- then pain may be due to Extra weight gain during pregnancy can cause you to experience postpartum leg pain when you breastfeed... Hormonal changes after delivery can relax your ligaments and joints, leading to pain in your lower body. Intravenous fluids administered during your labor and delivery can lead to swelling in your legs, which can cause pain while you sit for long stretches nursing your baby. Exhaustion from caring for new baby and lack of sleep can also cause your legs to hurt while you breastfeed. Rarely, a blood clot or infection in your leg can cause leg pain while you nurse... Pains in legs while you breastfeed might feel like a pins-and-needles or tingling sensation or a strong, spasmodic pain... My suggestion is depend on exercise (especially yoga) and supplements... Its better to get your doc opinion once... take care 😊

hi Sheeba. trust me I've the same pain in my right leg. I did have a sciatica problem and it has gotten worse after pregnancy. but I noticed that walking helps a lot. I've started exercising doing light weight training will make ur legs stronger and strengthen ur muscle. so u can try that. on days when the pain is too much. try this exercise: lie on ur stomach. n stretch ur hands straight. then lift both ur legs n hands together. hold it for few seconds n lower them together . start with 5 reps. this is a exercise my doctor recommended for sciatica problem. it's very effective. do let me know how is goes.

No sheeba...
Better to consult Orthopedic surgeon.... if needed he may refer to physio therapist or acupuncturist etc...

I still trying to figure it out. initially I too felt is it coz of feeding. As the shooting pain occur once baby start sucking.. I can feel whole nervous system. As I have Puton lot of weight... everyone is suggesting to reduce first.
