Q:

just heard from a doctor friend that during first trimester baby is entirely dependent on mom's thyroid hormone. mine was detected on 6th week of pregnancy and it was 19.6. by the time it became down to normal I was already done with my first trimester. will it really affect my baby's brain? I am so scared

Hello...
Thyroid hormones play a very important role in fetal brain development. The fetus depends entirely on maternal thyroid hormones for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, until the baby’s thyroid begins to produce thyroid hormones on its own. For the first trimester the baby is completely dependent on the mother for thyroid hormones necessary for brain development. Babies born to mothers with undiagnosed or inadequately treated hypothyroidism are at risk for lower IQ scores and learning disabilities. Hypothyroidism in pregnant women can adversely affect their children’s subsequent performance on neuropsychological tests. Decreases in performance can occur even when the the pregnant woman’s hypothyroidism is mild and probably asymptomatic... But As you mentioned it has been treated then no need to worry, wait till baby will come... Remember to do thyroid tests to newborn baby too.. Ask this to the paedeatrician also...

thank you Dr.
I am scheduled for anamoly scan next week. will that help me in  knowing if it has affected my baby's brain & development?  I suffered from endometriosis. with lot of pain, efforts, prayers and major surgery I have conceived naturally. I am very very tensed now..

Dr. Shilpitha Shanthappa

Sid...
Hope anamoly scan will clear all your doubts... but no doctor consider any scans as 100% true... it just give an idea that all is going well inside... dont take tension and ruin your golden time.. just enjoy this stage as you have struggled lot to reach here... take care 😊

thank you very much.. just hoping for the best now...
