my son 2 yr old having bottle caries.now he is having severe pain and swelling .now am in kuwait and doctor told to do surgical procedures.am worried.is it necessary to do tooth extraction.

If the tooth is infected to the root then a root canal or an extraction will be required. For a child this age it is required to do the procedure under general anesthesia. I would suggest seek a second opinion and then make your decision. Giving pain killers and not treating the root cause of the problem is not a good solution.

hello Doctor,
how to avoid caries?? my LO too has got them.i m trying to wean my 18 month Lo from night feed with no success till now.my dentist has suggested just to apply fluoride so as to to reduce it..I try to brush his teeth twice a day but he refuses to..but is root canal required for such small childrens milk teeth??

Neha milk teeth or adult teeth the root is the same hence if the root gets infected then it will also affect the adult teeth. It is best to avoid night feeds and not let the baby sleep with milk in the mouth. Caries can happen even with breast milk and ideally once the teeth start coming it is best to wean off the night feeds. You should give the baby a small drink of water after a feed if at all night feeds are happening. Additionally also make sure that your little one sleeps with mouth closed. Some children have a habit of breathing thru the mouth and this can also cause caries.
