Q:

Hi, I had an induced labor at 37w2d because of high BP. My baby was born with a birth weight of 3.1 kg. She had become 2.9 kg around day 4. She turns 1 month today and her weight is 3.1kg. is it anything to worry about ?
I had been breastfeeding her; till date but now her paediatrician advised to introduce formula as well.; Really confused with this.
How much formula should I be feeding
her ? What should have been the ideal weight for her now ?

Preeti while we wait for expert to answer, pl refer to this article for approximate weight tracking. Do keep in mind though that every baby has its own milestones. As long as your baby is peeing six to seven times , I don’t think there is new dto give formula at all.

its normal for baby to lose their birth weight after a few weeks from; their birth. I am also. breastfeeding my baby but giving formula at the same time as my. breast milk is not. sufficient for the baby. everytime my. baby is hungry i. give breastmilk but if he is still showing signs of hunger i give formula again

The thumb rule to understand if your baby is full or not is that he should pee atleast six to seven times a day. If that’s happening, pl do not give formula by all means. Your milk is the best !!

Ideal weight gain in the first month can be between 20-35 grams per day and since this is on the lower side the doctor has asked to give formula. However before we jump into that would suggest the following steps for one week :
1. Meet a lactation specialist to make sure the latch and suckle of the baby is fine as if that is not correct then even though baby is feeding milk transfer is not adequate.
2. Express milk using a pump after every feed. You can feed this expressed milk to the baby using a vati and spoon.
3. Feed baby every two hours and during a feed while baby is latched on gently compress the breast with your hands to encourage more fat flow to the baby.
Go for a weight check after one week and see what the gain is. If it falls between 20-35 grams per day then formula not needed and you can continue doing the above.
