Hey moms, how about some kitchen time for the little ones?

“Kids in the kitchen” is a new and cool way of keeping kids busy during vacations while they learn novel things. Most kids are fussy eaters but they don’t mind eating what they make. Involving kids in preparing food is an ideal way of feeding them new things (also old one’s which they always avoid), besides, they learn a lot about cooking ingredients, time management, problem solving and above all, patience.

Recently, when my son was a gifted a pack of M & M’s, I instantly thought of using some to bake cookies. I shared the idea with my 4-year-old and he was happy to help. We whipped up a batch of delicious chocolate flavoured cookies studded with M & M’s, they looked super gorgeous. His eyes glittered with pride when the colourful cookies were taken out of the oven. He undeniably had a blast making them.

You should definitely try making these attractive cookies along with kids, today itself.

Ingredients (Makes 8 cookies)

Refined Wheat Flour / Maida – 1 cup
Cocoa powder – 1.5 tablespoon
Baking powder – 1 teaspoon
Salt – a pinch
Icing Sugar – ½ cup
Butter – ½ cup
Milk – 2 tablespoon
1/4th cup + 1/4th cup – M&M candy or Cadbury Gems

Method

Step 1: Sift dry ingredients; refined wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt in a dry bowl and keep aside. An easy step which kids can do.

Step 2: In another dry bowl; whisk butter with sugar till light and fluffy. This step requires some strength and technique, so mums you have to help out the kids here.

Step 3: Divide the dry ingredients in 2 parts. Add one part to the butter sugar mixture and mix lightly with the whisk. Be very gentle and avoid over mixing as the cookie will become very hard. You can pass on the whisk, for this step, to the kids but watch out for vigorous mixing.

Step 4: Lightly fold in the 2nd half of dry ingredients using a spatula. Child can continue to mix.

Step 5: Using fingertips get the mixture together to make dough. Add milk if the dough feels dry, one tablespoon at a time. It’s now your turn to get your hands dirty as the child watches. Refrain from letting the child do this step as “being gentle” is the key here.

Step 6: Add 1/4th cup of M & M to the dough. Let the kids do this simple step, their thrill of adding M & M to the dough is priceless!

Step 7: Divide the dough into half. Keep one and give the other half to your child. Roll to make a cylinder. If the dough seems very soft and cannot be rolled then refrigerate it for 15 minutes before dividing.

Step 8: Break and divide each cylinder into four cookies. In total you should have eight cookies. Let the kids copy what you do.

Step 9: Shape the cookies well. Ensure no M & M candies are seen. Place cookies on a baking tray, at a distance from each other. Yes, kids can do this too!

Step 10: Top cookies with the other 1/4th cup of M & M candy. Flatten the cookie as you decorate it. Moms, step back. Decorating the cookie is completely a child’s prerogative!

Step 11: Place the cookie tray in fridge for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, pre-heat oven at 180 degrees C.

Step 12: Bake cookies in hot oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Let cookies cool completely, before eating or storing.

Tips:

1) If you cannot source icing sugar, then use ½ cup of powdered sugar mixed with 1 tablespoon of corn flour.
2) Cadbury Gems can easily replace M & M candy, if you please.
3) To make vanilla flavoured cookies, replace cocoa powder with 1 tablespoon of corn flour and add ½ teaspoon of Vanilla essence while whisking butter and sugar.
4) Chocolate chips also work wonders in this recipe. Add them along with the M & M candy at Step 6.
