This week, I bring to you some fun, easy ideas to learn letter I the phonetic way.

When we talk about letter I, we somehow instantly think about ice-cream. However, Ice-cream does not start with phonetic letter sound “Eeeh” (which you find in Igloo, India, Iran etc!).

So let’s look at how you can phonetically teach letter ‘I’ to a preschooler in a super fun, hands-on way!

Here is our shelf over-view:

As usual, we began by tracing the letter I with our sandpaper letter:

We also very quickly reviewed our “letter of the week poster” & “letter of the week folder”.

Letter of the week poster:

Letter of the week folder – this consists of picture cards starting from letter “I” (phonetic sound).

Next, I is also for the word “inside”! So I set up a tray with a cage, a water kettle and a jar. Further, I gave him a bird that he put “inside” the cage. He also poured some water “inside” a glass, and filled some pom poms “inside” a jar. So a very hands-on way to learn a super simple concept!

I is for insects, something that pretty much all children are intrigued about:-) So we did some insect-themed activities.

First a quick matching game of insect cards with their respective figurines.

After that we did an insect shadow matching activity:

Next, an insect themed fine motor activity – for this I created an insect template without any legs. And I gave my son some wooden pegs to pin on it!

Last in our insect-themed unit was a fun arts activity. I gave my son some vintage insect art cards, few water paints and brushes. And he had fun time freely and creatively drawing his own artwork;-)

I is also for Igloo! And I had the Arctic Safari Toob set (which I purchased from Flipkart) – it has the cutest igloo and eskimo miniature which I took out for this activity. I also made some fun fact cards about Igloo to quench my son’s curiosity. We also made an igloo using some cotton!

I also created Igloo-themed visual discrimination / matching cards:

Lastly, I is also for some wonderful countries (Read: India, Italy, Indonesia and Iran) – so I put together a simple cultural work for my son where we went through some picture cards of each of the country depicting their culture, flags, food habits, traditional attire etc!

So that concludes our shelf work for this week. You can catch the entire video on my YouTube channel:

You will also find the link to my blog in the video description, where you can download all printables for the activities mentioned.

Let me know if you try some of these ideas at home! Would love to hear from you.
