What I Didn’t Expect When I Was Expecting: A Funny, Raw Take on Pregnancy and Beyond

Books are great gifts for mums-to-be and new mums, especially the ones that tell them, ‘what to expect’. These books attempt to educate her in depth about what happens to the body and her baby, how to gear up for labour, what your baby will do in the first week, fourth week, first year and so on...

No doubt, such books are certainly informative, and the typical mum-to-be may keep it by her bedside table and smile beatifically at her bump as she reads them.

But it ends there.

After the whoosh of delivery and childbirth, the now new mum struggles to manage herself, the baby and her state of mind. She is tired, cranky, confused and keeps wondering, “Am I a bad mom?” And the books she reads never speak of these feelings.

“What I Didn’t Expect When I Was Expecting,” is not your usual pregnancy or parenting book. It attempts to tell the truth about child-rearing. A mum to three, author Tina Trikha has expressed her experiences on the parenting roller-coaster wide and clear. She tells the urban mom what cookie cutter parenting books don’t tell, and shares like a friend.

From managing sleepless nights to potty training then moving on to handling mom-guilt and being a ‘tiger mom’, Trikha has touched most of the rungs of the swirling parenting ladder with a dose of humor for good measure.

There’s a chapter on how her child drove her crazy with his fondness for only a particular kind of diaper, or the time when a bartender at a birthday party almost fed alcohol to the kids. I particularly liked the part on preparing an only child for a sibling, where she admits she made a few parenting mistakes in handling him, but learnt soon after.

I found myself nodding and smiling through the pages, and connected with Trikha especially when she opens up about post-partum blues and how it took her a long time to recognize it.

Trikha does not attempt to be a parenting guru or proclaim her parenting methods as ideal. She merely shares her parenting journey to make other mums feel better. Though I do not know if busy mums can take out the time to read or if pregnant mums may completely relate to her, but I can say it’s honest, raw and sincere. Read for a good laugh.
