Here’s a laundry list of reasons why this could happen
- Your hormonal changes causes the digestive system to slow down in the first trimester.
- You might have become sensitive to the different foods you eat
- An occasional viral or bacterial infection
- Certain Prenatal supplements could also freak your system out!
- Food poisoning due to eating contaminated food or water. This needs urgent attention by your gynaecologist.
- Loose motions in the third trimester is very common. You could get loose motions just before you go into Labor or a couple of weeks before Labor starts. It is just a way for some women’s bodies to get ready for their baby’s birth.
How to feel at ease with a runny stomach!
In most cases, diarrhea clears up in a few days but get it treated immediately, otherwise it can lead to serious consequences such as dehydration and loss of essential nutrients.
- Stay hydrated – Have at least 8 – 10 glasses of water. Apart from this, consume juices, soups, buttermilk to replenish the lost electrolytes and body salts. (Tip: Avoid Milk though)
- Go for an ORS solution with doctor’s advice.
Home Remedies:
You can try these if it is not so severe
- In Ayurveda, ginger is recommended as a treatment for diarrhea. Boil a piece of ginger in two cups of water. Steep it, reduce it to half and drink it.
- Drink Lemon and honey about 3-4 tablespoons through the day.
- Mix a tsp of lemon juice with half a tsp of ginger juice and black pepper powder
What to Eat during Loose motions
- Eat light foods that can be digested easily like apples, carrots, dry toast, crackers, yoghurt, khichdi, veg / chicken soup
- Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, especially while eating raw.
- Eat iron rich foods to cover up any deficiency
What Not to Eat during Loose Motions
- Do not eat or drink in unhygienic places.
- Stay away from roadside vendors.
- Stay away from uncooked, raw foods like salads, fruits, juices, garnishing like coriander on food.
- Avoid meats, spicy and fried foods, sweet and sugary foods, carbonated drinks and dairy products.
- Identify any specific foods that trigger loose motions in you and avoid them.
- Change your prenatal supplements in case they do not suit you.
