Dalia or Broken Wheat porridge is a humble dish and some kids may find it boring to consume on a regular basis. To keep my son’s interest alive in this nutritious food, I make this chocolate flavoured dalia occasionally as a treat. The porridge is fortified with nut powder for additional goodness. You can also top it with fresh fruits and more nuts to make a wholesome bowl of porridge.

Chocolate Porridge

2 toddler servings

Ingredients:

  • 1/4th cup broken wheat / dalia
  • 1 tbsp ghee / clarified butter
  • ½ cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 1.5 teaspoons nut powder (almonds, walnuts, pistachio, etc)
  • 1/4th cup grated chocolate (cooking chocolate or a ready to eat bar)

Method

Step 1 – Pick, wash and soak broken wheat in 1 cup water. Ideal soaking time is overnight but if you are making this at the eleventh hour, then soak in hot water for at least 45 minutes.

Step 2 – Heat ghee in a thick bottomed pan, add drained broken wheat and sauté it well till all grains are separate and coated well with ghee.

Step 3 – Add in water and sugar, let the mixture simmer and cook till all the water is soaked by the wheat grains.

Step 4 – Mix in the milk and nut powder. Keep stirring on low flame till the wheat is cooked.

Step 5 – Add in the grated chocolate and mix well. Cook further till desired porridge consistency is achieved. Serve warm garnished with fresh cut fruits and nuts.

Hope your child gobbles it up! If you know of any other ways of cooking Dalia, please share with us!
