Let’s peel some myths and discover the goodness of the good ol’ banana!

The banana needs no introduction. It is the most cost effective tropical fruit, easily available in abundance all year round in any part of India.

But the poor fruit has been on a slippery slope these past few years, thanks to a few myths. Since we are a community of mothers and good health means a lot to us, it is time to to peel off these myths and bring forth the goodness of the banana once again!

Bananas are not fattening! They are wholesome, easily digested and assimilated – ideal for normalizing weight! They have a rich reservoir of nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese and many others!

Only foods with empty calories (refined sugar, oil, refined/ processed foods – breads/ biscuits/ white rice etc) are the cause of fat/ unassimilated food.

Bananas do not induce colds. Live nutrients and richness present in bananas cleanse the body. Cough (mucus) is nothing but elimination of toxins present internally. So, if you or your child get cough after eating a banana, it’s just the trigger to a condition that has been in the works for some time now, not the cause. Eat more fruits and vegetables to cleanse toxins from your body.

A medium-sized banana contains about 3 grams of fiber, making it a fairly good fiber source. It contains mainly two types of fiber: pectin and resistant starch.

While pectin is active dietary fiber which aids bowel movement, resistant starch escapes digestion and ends up in our large intestine, where it becomes food for the beneficial bacteria in our gut.

So the next time you see a banana, just pick, peel and eat!
