You have laid your hands on the Fine Motor Skills, try out these Practical Life activities this week.

While this sounds simple, it is a very important area. It helps develop life skills, responsibility, boosts self esteem and prepares the child for the complex tasks ahead in life, both academic and non-academic.

Simple Mixing Tasks In Kitchen – At this age, you can try to involve your child in kitchen in simple tasks like mixing the batter, beating an egg etc. The grip and circular motion of mixing is not as easy for a child as it seems to us as adults. This helps your child write in future. So, before you give your child a pencil to write, try giving a spatula to mix a batter, and yes, even to your son

Simulating Cutting – This is one very popular toy among kids – Fruit and vegetable cutting pretend play set that has a Velcro in between and you use a blunt knife to cut through the Velcro. My son loved this toy. It is a great precursor to cutting activities that will come in the future.

Sorting – Need some help in arranging your vegetables in the fridge after you buy them from the super market? Involve your child and let him/her sort the vegetables in different containers. If he is interested, let him put them into your fridge. Sorting is a pre-math skill and this activity gives them a sense of the real life stuff. Kids love to do tasks that adults do and this simple task can instantly boost their self esteem.

Scooping – Scooping things out is a complex movement for children at this age. It involves good wrist control and rotation. In this picture, you can see that I gave my son some toy fish in a tub filled with water and he had to scoop them out. You can put pretty much anything in water and let your child play scoop scoop!

Look out for my next article in this series where I will share art/painting activities which you can do with your 19 month old child!
