Teach Your Child About Dhanteras Using Role Play

Dhanteras marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali celebrations. On this day, it is considered auspicious to buy metal or jewellery.

So how about using Dhanteras to teach your child a thing or two about tradition while equipping them with some pratical life skills? Not to forget all the fun!

In this activity, I set up two shops - one selling utensils and another selling jewellery. You will note that the jewellery shop has a weighing balance and both shops have some form of currency - notes and a credit card!

With older kids you can make the activity more complicated. So set up these shops and see how your child’s imagination runs riot with endless possibilities!

You can become the shopkeeper once and let the child be the customer. You can switch roles in the next turn.

How about taking the kids to an actual market next so that they can practically see what they just played?

What do kids learn from this?

Practical Life Skills

Traditions and Customs

Pretend Play

How The World Works

Try it this Dhanteras and let me know which part of the activity your kid found most interesting! Happy Diwali!
