Bathing your baby especially for the initial few times can be a challenging and tedious process. As new parents, you might be confused about the dos and don’ts. Here are some practical tips for baby bath time that will make the process easier and more fun for both you and the baby.
Getting the bath time ritual right can be really easy if you have the right items by your side.
Here is the baby bath time list you need to tick.
It is important to keep all the required items within arm’s reach so that you do not have to leave the baby alone while it is in the tub.
A sponge bath is recommended till the umbilical cord falls off. The baby bath time routine using a bathtub can be started immediately after that. It is important to select the right bathtub for your baby. It should be slip proof with an internal sling that prevents the baby from sliding. Remember that the baby’s head should always remain out of the tub to prevent any mishap. If you do not have a bath tub, you can also improvise the kitchen sink to create a decent environment for your baby’s bath.
Babies lose heat easily; therefore, it is important to keep the bathroom warm between 24-27⁰ C. Investing in a thermometer is also a good idea so that excessively warm or cold water does not harm the baby. If you do not have a thermometer, you can do an elbow test to check if the water is at the right temperature as the elbow area is more sensitive than our palms.
It is important that the baby enjoys the bath time, so that the process becomes easier for both the care giver and the baby. Thus, select a time when the baby is not cranky. Some babies find the water splashing activity to be stimulating and enjoy it first thing in the morning while others mellow down and should be given a bath before bedtime. In case of new-borns, it is not compulsory to bathe them every consecutive day as long as you keep their face, neck, and limbs clean and change the diaper when required. Giving them a bath 2 to 3 times a week is good enough.
Baby bath time accessories and games can go a long way in terms of learning and development. Singing and talking to your baby while giving bath improves interaction and bonding. It not only keeps your baby clean but also gives you a break from your hectic schedule. Adding toys of different colours and shapes helps spark their imagination and improves cognition and memory.
