Have you ever been stressed and just visualizing about a beach, its vast expanse of golden sand and a frolicking sea has calmed you down? Yes! That’s exactly what I am talking about.  Beaches are God’s way of saying, “Take a break, Kiddo!”

And don’t even get me started on how much the little ones enjoy at the beach! A whole day playing in the sand and it is still difficult to wrench them free from the sand leaden world.

So here’s a list of reasons why Sun, Sand and Smiles  are a great combination for your kids’ creativity to blossom.

1-  Imagination at play

Sand is not programmed for one click and phew! a sand castle gets built. No! It takes little hands, a few handy tools and a rich imagination to turn it into a mountain or a cave or a desert island or whatever one can think of. Sand is like a musical instrument, one has to play the instrument to create melody!

2- No Right or Wrong

There is no right or wrong in playing with sand. It allows  children to wonder, ask and answer their own questions, picture ‘what if…’ scenarios. Digging and sifting through sand, building sand castles or desert islands, pouring and exploring with sand reduces kids’ fear of failure and encourages them to experiment. Now, isn’t that how creative geniuses are made!

3- Interactive

Playing in the sand with friends means having to share buckets, shovels and other tools. So a little bickering, pushing, and crying are inevitable. But it is all good. It helps them to learn to assert themselves, negotiate, empathize and compromise. And the best part, it means being a part of something bigger. No wonder kids glow with pride at the end of beach day.

4- Mathematics and Sand

Yep, you read that right. We are talking about Mathematics and Sand in the same sentence. When your child fills bucket after bucket of sand, she realizes concepts like ‘more than’, ‘less than’, ‘equal to’, ‘so many’, ‘so few’, ‘empty’, ‘full’, ‘light’ and ‘heavy’. For example, for a big mountain, she’s going to need more than 2 buckets of sand.

But don’t forget to provide them with measuring spoons and cups in a variety of sizes and shapes.

While your little ones measure one cup, two cup, three cups of sand, your cup of happiness will be filled to the brim by watching them learn and play.

5- Joie de Vivre

Simply being at the beach, letting the sand run through your fingers, feeling its texture is reason enough to celebrate. Invite your child to write her name in the sand, wet her feet in the water, take a walk on the beach and collect sea shells. Together, make a song about sand or let her tell you a story that takes place at the beach. You will be amazed by her story telling prowess.

Children have a natural fondness for sand. Encourage it. Because the less a toy does, the more a child learns. And what better toy than beautiful, golden sand!
