What I have learnt from my experience is that sometimes we see our babies ( specially upto 6 months when the physical activity is lesser) crying for no reason. Most of the times it’s GAS.
If you have a colicky Baby & he/she is having trouble passing gas, it can cause a lot of discomfort to him/her
(Also the gas is formed because till 6 months the main source of food is milk and they inhale lot of air thru breastfeeding or bottle feeding.)
It takes time to learn to understand if your baby needs to pass gas. Most babies cry uncontrollably when they are unable to pass the gas inside their body. You may also notice that your baby:
* Keeps pulling his/her legs upwards while crying
* Starts crying after every feed
* Has a hard tummy
* Is fussy and cranky
Once you see the above symptoms and are sure that your baby has gas, you may try the following home remedies:
Massaging with Mustard Oil – Gently massage the baby’s tummy using mustard oil. Mustard oil helps to calm the digestive system and also induces sleep in babies.
Apply Hing – Hing or asafoetida, which is traditionally added to various Indian recipes, is a great way to relieve gas in babies and toddlers. Just take a pinch of hing and dissolve it in a spoonful of warm water or breast milk.Once you have a watery paste, apply it around the baby’s navel and see your little one pass gas within minutes.
If your baby is above 1 year of age, you may add a pinch of asafetida to his food, such as dal ,khichdi etc.
I also tried the following methods which elders advised and found them of help -
Cycle Exercise – Exercise your baby’s legs slowly in a cycling motion. This puts pressure on the tummy and helps the baby to pass the gas. Make sure you do this at least an hour after the feed.
Massage the back – Lay your baby on his stomach and gently massage the back. This also helps to relieve gas.
Saunf Water for toddlers– Saunf is really useful in dispelling gas in toddlers. Just boil 1 ½ teaspoons of saunf seeds in 4 cups of water. Allow it to cool and give it to your toddler 1 tspn 2-3 times a day.
Cumin Seeds for toddlers – They prevent gas from forming. Just boil 1/2 tsp cumin seeds with a cup of water for 5 minutes. Once cooled, just give 1 tsp of this water to your baby 2-3 times a day.
