Mira Rajput, the mum-to-be, revealed to a leading entertainment magazine that Shahid had named their first child. So she said that she would like to pick their second child’s name.
“We haven’t decided the name of the baby yet. In fact, we are open to all suggestions. Misha’s name was Shahid’s selection. So, this time, I might get to select the name,” said Mira.
Misha is a name that is coined out of syllables from both Mira and Shahid’s names.
Naming a child might have come a long way today, but traditionally, choosing a baby name is attached to many rituals and beliefs belonging to a certain culture or region. Here’s how a baby is named around the world.
United Kingdom
In ancient UK, a baby was named few days after birth, during the baptism ceremony. The name is chosen from one of the godparents’ names and did not have much variety.
Spain
In Spain, the first born daughter is named after the father’s mother and the first son, after the father’s father.
France
The French use the grandparents’ names as the child’s middle name and may choose a unique first name
Hawaii
It is said that the ancestral God will send the name of the unborn child via signs, visions or dreams. It is believed that if that particular name is not used, the child could become a cripple.
China
The Chinese never choose a name for an unborn child as they consider it as inauspicious. A “milk name” that is something bad, is kept for the baby to be to ward away evil spirits.
Indian
In India, a baby’s Namkaran ceremony is usually conducted after 40 days of birth. A cradle is decorated with flowers and the child’s family gather around the cradle and sing songs. The paternal aunt chooses the name of the child in some regions of the country and she whispers it into the child’s ear along with Gods’ names.
