Infections and rashes can be quite tricky to deal with, be it in adults or children. Especially when it comes to yeast infection in babies, this can be difficult to diagnose as it has almost the same symptoms as rashes.

So, if your child has a rash and you are not sure what it could be, then you should consider that your child could have a yeast infection.

Yeast infections in babies mainly occur in the mouth, as a skin rash, or in the nether regions. They are quite  common and are curable.

Read on to find out the different kinds of baby yeast infection treatments so that your child can be happy and healthy again.

A Few General Symptoms

A yeast infection occurs when there is an overgrowth of yeast in the body, mostly  due to dampness or the usage of antibiotics. While a mild yeast infection may be difficult to identify immediately, here are a few symptoms you should watch out for when you are examining your baby for a yeast infection:

  • Rashes that don’t go away even after two or three days.
  • Red dots all over the infected area.
  • Blisters or pus-filled sores.
  • Tender and raw skin around the area.

Baby Yeast Infection Treatment

It may not always be necessary to consult a paediatrician immediately after the infection appears. There are some remedies that you can try at home too which may be of help.

Diaper/Skin Yeast Infection

  • Remove the clothing around the infected area and place the baby on a dry towel.
  • Gently pat the skin with a cloth to make sure it is dry.
  • Use an ointment or petroleum jelly on the affected area.
  • When you put any clothes on make sure they are loose.
  • Don’t use wet wipes to clean your baby’s body. Instead, use water and cotton balls or a soft cloth.

Oral Yeast Infection

If the yeast infection appears inside the mouth, then trying home remedies can be difficult. In this case, it is recommended to take your baby to a paediatrician who will most likely recommend anti-fungal creams or ointments for your baby.

Prevention Techniques to Try

While baby yeast infection treatments are highly effective, you should always try to prevent the infection from occurring. Following are a few techniques which can help you do so.

  • Remove your baby’s clothing for half an hour at least four times a day to prevent accumulation of sweat or moisture.
  • Try to avoid tight clothing.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene for your child and clean your baby’s gums after every meal.
  • If your baby has teeth or is in the process of getting them, use a soft brush and water to wash their teeth.

Parting Advice

There are ways in which you can try to prevent yeast infection. Because yeast infection generally arises in body parts that sweat, make sure to keep your baby clean and dry.

However, in case your baby ends up having a yeast infection despite your best efforts, understand that sometimes, it just happens. Remember that consulting a paediatrician is a prudent course of action, especially if the infection is severe or isn’t subsiding even after a couple of days.
