Pregnancy is exciting news, but it can be accompanied by a host of health issues. As such, many women dismiss it as a corollary of being pregnant, deeming it normal which it isn’t.

So don’t take it casually or consider it as a part of your pregnancy even if your motherly instincts say it’s all good. Always choose to consult your doctor first.

To know what causes fever during pregnancy and the steps you can take to prevent it, read on.

  • Viral infection
  • Bacterial infection
  • Pneumonia
  • Tonsillitis
  • Influenza
  • Food poisoning (caused by viral or bacterial contamination)
  • A weakened immune system

How Will the Baby Be Affected?

Fever is an indication that there’s an infection your body is fighting against. And, there can be severe complications depending upon the type and cause of infection.
Women who suffer from fever during pregnancy are more likely to have a child with birth defects and slower development which can adversely affect the development of a baby’s heart and jaw or even result in autism in some cases.

Since there are such complications involved, it is important to seek a doctor’s advice and follow the required treatment. Also, discuss the potential risks that naturally accompany the prescribed medications.

How Can You Treat Your Fever During Pregnancy?

Treatment at home

If it is a mild fever, these home remedies will help you get through it.
Place a damp wash-cloth on your forehead to bring down the temperature.
Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
Take rest. Let your body recover at its own pace.
Stay indoors and in cool and open areas.
Take a bath in lukewarm water; it helps in bringing down your body temperature.

Consult a Doctor

If your fever doesn’t seem to subside in 24 to 48 hours, consult a doctor immediately. Neglecting the symptoms and not going for an early treatment can lead to a miscarriage or even pre-term labour.

Some common medications prescribed to treat your fever are:

  • In the case of a viral infection, doctors usually prescribe Tylenol which should be enough to alleviate your fever.
  • If there’s some bacterial infection, an antibiotic is required which should always be prescribed by your doctor.

Note:

  • Remember not to self-medicate!
  • Also, avoid Ibrufen(Advil) as it can affect your baby’s cardiovascular system.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Taking the right amount of Vitamin C can boost your immunity thereby preventing a number of diseases.

Another important thing is to practice self-hygiene, which most people  do not deem important. Always keep your hands clean to avoid any infection. Always carry a sanitizer with you if possible an d try and avoid foods that are unhygienic.

Lastly, don’t skip your shots or vaccines and be regular with your doctor’s appointments.
