Earlier, obstetricians used to resort to a Cesarean section only during birth emergencies. Now, we hear of C-section deliveries every now and then till the point that it has become extremely common, and statistics support this.

A research published in The Lancet says that the number of births by C-section over the world has almost doubled, from 12% in 2000 to almost 21% of all births in 2015.
Many might argue that C-sections have saved the lives of many babies but it does not come without risks to both the mother and the newborn.

Usually, 10-15% births require medical intervention in delivery due to emergencies like bleeding, foetal distress and hypertensive disease. But, researchers have pointed out that more than one in four countries have had around 63% C-section deliveries, which is more than the recommended level.

The studies also show that wealthier women were six times more likely to have a C-section than women from poorer backgrounds. Private hospitals also had around 1.6 times the chance of having Cesarean deliveries as compared to government hospitals.

Most of us have to blindly trust medical professionals during times of emergencies as we do not have the expertise or the knowledge in the field to weigh the pros and cons thoroughly. Doctors and hospitals are increasingly recommending C-sections to expecting parents citing an emergency or convenience. C-section is convenient for some gynaecologists and obstetricians who wish to take an easy way out as the deliveries can be timed and they involve a higher fees.

There is no harm in undergoing a C-section when needed, but having a normal delivery has several benefits over delivery with intervention. Here’s how you can try for a higher chance of having a normal delivery.

Look for a doctor who has a history of normal deliveries

Talk to experienced moms who can recommend good doctors around the area. Usually, most moms readily share their birth stories

Exercise and eat right

The right exercises in the second and third trimesters can help fix the baby’s head in the right position thus increasing chances of normal delivery. Being in the right weight bracket will also lower the chances of a C-section.

Right postures

Birthing experts recommend the use of birth friendly postures to make normal delivery possible.

Positive reinforcement

Talk to your baby and mentally prepare yourself for a normal birth. The more relaxed a mom-to-be is, the more she will persist through the labour process.
