Marriages are made in heaven, they say, but some people are forced to believe otherwise. For these spouses, their marriage is a living hell, something they want to get out of, but for reasons known only to them, they can’t. They are like caged birds singing and living in a delusion that what they see around them is their world and that jumping around this cage is like flying. In a conservative society like India, divorcing your husband can be considered equal to committing a sin.

We need to remember is that ‘life is short, live it to the fullest, live happy”, but this is easier said than done. Here are some common reasons as to why married couples, who would be better off out of their marriage, are still with their spouses.

1. Children

Children are their parent’s whole world. They mean so much to a parent that some people even consider staying in an abusive marriage just to keep their children happy. This is because, a child would always like to see their parents together. A home is where children learn most of their lessons, where they build a stable future, so a broken home is not an ideal place for them to stay. Some couples even fear that if they split up with their spouse, they might not be able to meet their children due to results of custody battles.

2. Attachment towards in-laws and parents

Sometimes, a person’s love towards their in-laws and parents can be the reason they’re sticking around in a marriage. In-laws and parents step in when a couple comes to a point where the have nothing else to look forward to in the relationship. If both spouses or one spouse is attached to either set of parents, they tend to try stay on for some time. Although, this doesn’t really mean that anything between the couple has gotten better.

3. Money

Money is a major factor motivating couples to stay together. If you rise above the issue of money and consider the child’s happiness, you will see that it is something you cannot put a price tag on. Divorce is a highly expensive decision, literally! Hence many couples resort to staying in the marriage for mutual benefits and considering their relationship as nothing more than them being cohabitants.

4. The incentives

The luxurious lifestyle, the smile on their child’s face, a house, the money and many more incentives have become a reason for couples staying married. It’s true, that even something like a vacation abroad has stopped individuals from separating from their spouse. A guarantee that marriage puts a roof over their head also makes people lazy about moving away from their bad marriage.

5. The fear of loneliness

We are all social beings and love to interact. The people we make a part of our life over time become treasures that we would not want to give up. Divorce not only keeps your spouse away from you, but all those people related to your spouse as well. This means that more than half of the people you know are going to distance themselves away from you regardless of your relationship with them when you were married. A good support system is important for survival, and we need good people to help us get through life. Loneliness is definitely not going to make anything better.
