You’re in your first trimester – possibly the most nerve wracking time of your life. When you’re pregnant, you are, in general, in a sensitive, vulnerable state. The first three months are the most crucial, as this is the phase when your baby and you are developing physiologically. At this point, your growing baby’s health depends on your health. 1. Soak in the nutrients

Hence, it’s solely in your hands to ensure your baby is getting all the nutrients and nourishment it needs. Simply put, eat right! Make sure to follow a balanced diet, packing in all the protein, fibre and healthy fats you can. Another key thing here is to listen to your body. You may build an aversion to certain foods and if it’s making you sick, it’s best not to eat it.

2. Stay hydrated

When you’re pregnant, you become much more vulnerable to dehydration. Fatigue could get to you and hence, sip on water or some iced tea constantly could help you get through the day without feeling faint. Staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your body and your baby and also for a healthy pregnancy.

3. Remember to be regular with your iron and folic acid supplements

During the early pregnancy period, folic acid is extremely important. During this stage, the foetus begins developing nerve cells. However, in the case of a folic acid deficiency, it can cause neural defects or a deformed spine. Iron supplements too are essential for the baby’s blood. These supplements are not just required for the baby’s health, but the mother’s health too, to reduce the risk of anaemia and reduce bouts of fatigue and tiredness.

4. Get in some yoga or exercise into your routine

Movement helps reduce the risk of developing diabetes, which pregnancy makes you more prone to. Getting in a few minutes of walking or low impact exercises are said to reduce the chances of having a caesarian birth. Make sure to discuss with your doctor regarding what exercises will be right for you according to your body type and weight.

5. Be regular with your check-ups

Avoid missing out on appointments. In the first trimester, regular check-ups are essential in tracking the healthy growth of the baby and the mother. It is essential that your doctor is up to date and part of your pregnancy journey to avoid any implications.

The DON’Ts

In your pregnancy, there are certain things you need to avoid and cut out from your routine. Here are those ‘doit’s’ in your pregnancy you need to take care of.

1. Do not indulge in smoking

These habits need to be cut out from your life when you’re pregnant, as it can cause extreme risks to your baby’s health. The chemicals that enter your body while smoking can cause a miscarriage, rupture in the amniotic sack or even placenta previa, which is a condition where the placenta gets placed in the wrong position in the uterus. Passive smoking too puts the baby at the risk of developing meningitis.

2. Avoid alcohol intake

Fetal alcohol syndrome is a serious condition that causes developmental disorders and disabilities in the baby caused by excessive alcohol intake. Hence, avoiding alcohol is the best way to ensure your child doesn’t develop this condition.

3. Do not starve yourself dieting

Ensure a healthy, balanced diet, however, make sure you get good nutrition. Starving yourself could cause unwanted deficiencies, which could affect your baby’s health. Gaining some healthy weight during pregnancy allows for good nourishment to your baby.

4. Avoid steam rooms or hot tub baths

These are said to increase the risk of a miscarriage. Moreover, streams or saunas increase the temperature of your body unnecessarily, causing dehydration and affecting the development of the baby.

5. Keep stress levels low

It’s very easy to develop anxiety and stress when you’re pregnant. You are responsible for another human being after all. However, such stress can take a toll on your body and the baby. Avoiding stressful situations, or practising meditation techniques to decrease stress is helpful in avoiding the risks of miscarriage and developmental implications in the foetus.
