The most important time in a day for a baby who has just entered our planet is the time s/he feeds. Breastfeeding is important not just because it supplies food to the baby, but also because it is the only meal a baby might have till they are at least 6 months old, which means they depend of breastmilk for all their nutrition and energy.

However, breastfeeding is not exactly easy or clean. At the very least, it’s really messy and considering the fact that babies sleep and feed quite often, it might be a task to clean up each time. We suggest that you, as a new mom, follow some basic hygiene tips to keep you and your baby clean, well-fed and happy. Of course, most of these you’ll learn on-the-go, but it won’t harm to have a bit of a head start!

1. Make sure you wear loose, comfortable clothes

You’ll be feeding your baby several times a day, and even during the night. It would be so inconvenient if you had to struggle with your clothes every single time. Stick to non-restrictive, loose-fitting and comfy clothes that will allow you to feed your babe easily, without having to take off your clothes or unbuttoning.

2. Try and wear a new nursing bra every night

Very important tip: change your bra every day to avoid bacterial infection and and skin breakdown. Most breastfeeding moms also sleep in nursing bras to avoid leaking and because they’re more comfortable. Just make sure that you’re wearing a clean new bra every day.

3. Change your baby’s diaper when needed

Babies might need to have multiple nappy changes throughout the night, so even though it might be a royal pain in the famous backside, it’s necessary in order to keep the baby clean and healthy. You need to avoid that baby rash at ALL costs. You don’t need to wake up a sleeping baby, though. After they’re a few months old, they’ll learn bladder control and you won’t have to change nappies at odd hours.

4. Tie up your hair

This is more a matter of convenience and safety rather than a hygienic concern. Your hair might get in the way of breastfeeding. It might even actually get wrapped around your baby’s neck and without you even realizing it. Just to be on the safer side, tie up your hair in a bun, ponytail or a braid.

5. Wash and change your sheets frequently

Babies are prone and susceptible to all kinds of diseases because their immune system isn’t fully functional yet, so it might be a good idea to use clean sheets often. With the added person who makes more of a mess than usual, washing frequently is the way to go.

For many new moms, breastfeeding might seem like a daunting task, but with a few tips and tricks, you’ll learn it in no time. Share this with others and help them be prepared!
