Used for centuries thanks to their amazing healing properties, essential oils are back on top of the charts among the select group of ‘those who know’. Now whether you’re a veteran user or a newbie, we’ve compiled ten unique ways to use essential oils for everything from pimples to the sniffles. Welcome to the Essential Oil masterclass!
Zit Zapping Treatment
Skin breaking out and you can’t bear to look at yourself in the mirror? Take two drops of Tea Tree oil and place directly on the breakout. The offending spot will literally disappear as you look! As a pimple preventive, here’s a DIY toner you can make: Mix 20 drops Tea Tree oil with 60 ml Witch Hazel. Apply nightly on your face with a cotton ball.
Instant Stress Buster
Need a calm-me-down at the end of a stressful work week?  Fill a bowl with steaming hot water and add a drop of Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Lavender essential oils to it. Then drape a towel over your head and take slow, deep breaths. Feel the stress melt away. Bonus: It’s also a circulation boost and brings a rosy flush to your face.
Banish Dandruff For Good
This one’s a real scalp saviour. Just mix two drops each of Lemon, Peppermint and Lavender essential oils with 30 ml of a carrier oil like Olive, Almond or Argan. Now massage the essential oil mix into your scalp, allowing it to soak for at least 15 minutes. Alternatively, you can leave it on overnight. Shampoo and condition as usual. No more flakes!
Instant Relief From Sunburn
This is a godsend after a day spent outdoors. Add a few drops of Lavender essential oil to your regular Aloe Vera Gel and keep refrigerated. Apply on sun baked skin for instant cool and healing.
To Get A Restful Night’s Sleep
At the end of a frazzled work day it’s hard to fall asleep. All you need to do is add 10-20 drops of Petitgrain Oil to a spray bottle filled with water. Use this to mist your pillows and bed linen before climbing in. Petitgrain Essential Oil has similar properties to soothing Lavender Oil, but has a subtler, woody smell that instantly calms nerves and relaxes the mind.
Relief From A Hacking Cough
Have a niggling cough and fed up of colds meds? Keep congestion and allergies at bay with this natural, super effective solution. Mix a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil in 30 ml of Olive Oil and massage onto your chest for (almost) instant relief.
Quick Energy Booster
Can barely drag yourself out of bed in the a.m.? It’s time to switch your morning mug of java to a couple of drops of Rosemary essential oil added to a cup of hot water. This marvellous herb has analgesic, antibacterial, anticancer, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It naturally stimulates the circulatory system and boosts blood flow to wake you up.
Get Rid Of Stale Smells
Freshen up your home and work space instantly. Mix equal parts of distilled water, color-less alcohol (vodka or gin will do) and five drops each of Pine, Cedarwood and Juniper Berry essential oils. Spritz liberally and then soak up the fresh aroma and compliments. Beats those toxic aerosol air fresheners any day!
Bring The Spa To Your Bathroom
All you need to do is turn on the shower to hot mode and sprinkle a few drops of your favorite essential oil on the shower floor. Sheer bliss! Try Sandalwood oil in the winter and Rose oil in the summer
Never Fail De-Bloating Treatment
By far the coolest essential oil hack we’ve uncovered. Just rub a drop of Cardamom essential oil on your tummy if you start feeling bloated. Cardamom naturally purifies and the sweet-spicy scent boosts circulation and encourages movement and flow. Just in time to pull on your skinny jeans!
