It’s only recently that people are taking emotional wellness seriously. I hope you have heard saying, “Happy people are richest people”. Mental health is important part of overall health. No doubt pregnancy is one of the most beautiful phase of a woman’s life. But it comes with lot of doubts, questions and a lot more of hormonal changes. As a result mood swings are observed. Sometimes expecting mother stresses or worries a lot, affecting her emotional wellness and indirectly affecting baby to some extent.

First let us understand the meaning of emotional wellness. It is being attentive to both positive and negative feelings and be able to understand how to handle these emotions. During pregnancy, there are significant changes in your hormone levels of estrogen and progesterone. They affect the chemicals in brain that affect mood. An expecting mother is excited for this new milestone but at same time overwhelmed and stressed. There are constant worries like, “will I be a good parent?”, “will I be able to take care of baby properly?” , “will the baby be healthy?” and many like these. These doubts cause stress and hence affecting the mental health of expecting mother.

Since baby is closely connected to mother (in womb), the environment, the food, the emotions a mother goes through have direct effect on the growth and development of baby’s health and brain. In simple words, happy mom happy baby. So it’s important for expecting mothers to take care of their emotional well-being  along with their physical health. Few things that can be done are:

  • Sleep properly.
  • Take small naps so that you don’t tire yourself.
  • Spend time with your partner and share your doubts or anything going on  in your mind.
  • Go for outings like a movie or a park, so that your mind is relaxed.
  • You can try your hands on pre-natal yoga or meditation.
  • Go for walks.
  • Listen to music, it is the best therapy.
  • Talk to your doctor if you constantly feel exerted or depressed.
