The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), is a programme of the Government of India (2005) started for the improvement of maternal health. The goal of NRHM was to reduce 100 deaths
per 1,00,000 live births.

The main strategy discussed by Government of India under NRHM programme was:

  • Highly Skilled Birth Attendant (SBA)
  • Providing Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC) through First Referral Unit (FRU)
  • Easy accessibility to PHC and CHC
  • Establishment of Public Private Partnership (PPP) eg. Chiranjivi Yojana
  • Easy and safe abortion services.
  • Strengthening Referral Systems; e.g., 108 Ambulance service, Janani Express.

The NRHM programme encouraged and supported further investment in the area of infrastructure, human resource and skilled personnel for several public sector facilities. It also provided Indian Public Health Standard (IPHS) for the development of several public health sectors.
