It is often said that your bookshelf needs to be bigger than the size of your television. This is because most of us prefer watching TV shows and movies instead of reading a book. And since adults do this, their kids are most likely to follow suit. Almost every kid would have been scolded by his/her mom or dad for watching too much TV.

“Chashme lag jayenge” is a famous dialogue for parents when they notice that their little one is spending hours in front of the idiot box. But at time children can’t be blamed as it is the adults who have not inculcated the habit of reading.

It doesn’t help that now technology has taken over our lives and kids of this generation would rather spend time on a mobile phone or tablet than going outside to play. In fact, some of them are so addicted to these electronic gadgets, that they often throw tantrums and only calm down when the phone is handed to them.

While parents have a lot on their plate, they shouldn’t encourage such behavior. Kids must head out to play as this helps them make new friends It also keeps them fit as sitting on the couch will make them lethargic. When at home, the habit of reading must be inculcated. Kids must read books in their every single day.

Why Kids Should Read Books:

It is great to strengthen the bond between a parent and child. Reading books together helps a mom or dad spend quality time with their kids.

Books play an important role in the development of a child’s language and vocabulary skills. Even if the baby is small, s/he will slowly begin to grasp new words.

Unlike movies, where you can see characters on the screen, books make you imagine them. They encourage you to think as there is no acting or music involved.

Books help kids get ready for the real world. Reading books for kids often relevant tell stories and are learning lessons. So if you want to teach your child about say friendship, you can always narrate a story on it.

They are a wonderful companion. IF your kid spends a lot of time alone at home, it’s best to get him/her a tonne of books. Your child won’t even realize how time flies when s.he starts reading.

Books provide information. Yes, if you buy non-fiction books, your kid will begin to learn a lot from them.

How To Get Kids To Read:

Read to your kid every single day.

Read in front of your child. Toddlers often ape their parents, so if you read, s/he may do so too. If they see that their parent loves to read, they would pick up a book instead of the tablet.

When reading to your child, do it aloud. Make the story interesting and if you can, enact it a bit.

Make it an interactive activity. Ask questions around the book, so that your kid is more involved in the process.

Try to identify alphabets in  your day-to-day surroundings. Like, get your child to read the number of a car.
