About 1 in 100 children in India under age 10 has autism, and nearly 1 in 8 has at least one neurodevelopmental condition. The estimates are based on the first rigorous study of its kind in the country. The estimate for neurodevelopmental conditions is about 10 times higher than the 1.3 percent reported in India’s 2011 census.

Autism, a neurological disorder, is also called spectrum disorder because no two people have the same symptoms. The symptoms range from speech disorders to intellectual disability. Autism awareness is slowly increasing all over the world especially in India. While the awareness is on high the acceptance is still no where close to high.

The minute parents are informed about their child being autistic, the first thing that comes to their mind is the future. While people with autism disorders have made remarkable achievements and progress in their life and career and while they are slowly getting absorbed and accepted in organizations and institutions, they are still struggling to find their life partners. A group of five mothers from Mumbai, Chennai, Coimbator and Bengaluru have come up with a facebook matrimony group to seek matrimonials for their autistic sons in their late twenties who are educated and earning. Like there is always light at the end of the dark tunnel, over a period of fortnight, this facebook community also received more than 100 followers out of which 90% are parents of autistic children who have opted to participate in an anticipation of preparation for future. Ironically, people with autism do not suffer with their disorder as much as they suffer from the way they are treated in society. These mothers who have come up with a beautiful initiative of finding a companion for their children are seeking a secured future where they know they will not be in.

Autism might be a disorder because it does not match the definition of normalcy. But it is something that can be diagnosed as early as in the first year of birth and be addressed well with right kind of treatment and therapies. It is just essentially vital that parents observe their children and mark their growth and development milestone charts from day one of their birth and recognize variance sooner than later. It will only help them give their child a better future.

“It takes a village to raise a child. It takes a child with autism to raise the consciousness of the village,” Coach Elaine Hall
