Cognitive skills are the core skills your brain uses to think, read, learn, remember, reason, and pay attention. It is of utmost importance that kids have proper cognitive development as they grow. Cognitive skills help them in mental and physical development which is a rapid phenomenon at an early age.
There are a lot many ways and activities, with the help of which parents can enhance the cognitive abilities of their babies. Here are a few of them:
Listening is an important skill that needs to be inculcated in babies. This skill helps them to learn new terms and languages. Introduce your baby to various toys and instrument which produce different sounds. Not only will your baby learn to differentiate between sounds, but it will also help them develop their physical cognition during the process. Shaking, banging and throwing toys or sound-producing objects develops their motor and neural skills.
Developing and stimulating other senses such as touch, smell and sight is also necessary. You can start with basic things such as asking your baby to identify and differentiate between numerous patterns. These patterns can be anywhere. Be it your walls, mattresses or curtains. This will help them understand geometry constructs and mirror images. You can stimulate your baby’s sense of smell by taking them into the garden to help them whiff different scents.
Toys might seem the most trivial of things to be bothered about. But they are not. The right kind of toys can help your babies develop their cognitive abilities. Rattles, blocks, ball drops, baby gyms and shape sorters are few of those toys which teach your kids a bunch load of things while also developing their motor and neural coordination. Toys are more than just entertainment. So make a wise choice.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Your babies need to learn the effects or consequences of their actions. You can give them examples in the form of stories or practical demos while playing with blocks, sand or objects. Show them how, if a block tower is kicked, it falls down and crumbles. Show them that sand is fine enough to slip through the small spaces of their fingers. Show them how objects move around or perform some activities after you put batteries into them.
If your baby has their birthday up and coming you might as well make it a little fun. Make them find their gift instead of directly giving it to them. Building a treasure hunt will induce creative thinking in your kids and get them running about the house. Not only will it immensely satisfy them once they have found their gifts but it will also have developed numerous cognitive skills in them.
Yes, even if your baby is 1 week old, you can read and talk to them. Talking to them while indicating or explaining a certain situation will help them associate spoken words with objects and their immediate physical surroundings. Reading and showing them pictures helps them to develop a photographic memory. This technique will help your baby develop their cognitive abilities in a very successful manner.
