All About Breast Abscess During Lactation

Lactational Breast Abscess may happen due to blocked milk duct, or bacterial infection in fluid collection and blockage ducts of a lactating mothers breast. It should be treated effectively and promptly with out wasting time so that the mother gets free of pain, fever and resumes back to breastfeeding.

 

Symptoms

 

  • Severe pain in breast and body ache
  • Pain in armpits
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Unable to feed the baby.

 

Treatment

 

  • Incision and Drainage
  • Antibiotics or Analgesic
  • Needle Aspiration
  • The mother should hand Express her milk and discard it.
  • Continue to breastfeed from the unaffected side.

 

Once the treatment is complete and the mother feels comfortable, she must  again latch the baby directly to breast. Till then she must keep expressing milk and either discard her milk or use it to bathe the baby.
