An Achievement That Is Soaring Space-The Woman Behind Chandrayaan 2

Yet another mission from ISRO created a mark in space history on 22nd July 2019 with the launch of Chandrayaan 2, India’s second lunar exploration. While the mission and the spacecraft are getting all the attention and applause from all around the world, we would like to bring in forefront the brain and name behind the entire project – Ritu Karidhal Srivastava.

Adding another leap to woman empowerment, Ritu, who was also the deputy operation director for ‘Mangalyan’- Mars Mission-is the mission director for Chandrayaan-2. This achievement of ISRO has made India only the fourth country to land a ‘rover’ on the lunar surface and also make it the first in the world to attempt a landing on the south polar region of the moon.

Ritu, a dedicated wife and a mother of two, was always fond of Science as a child. Hailing from the Nawab city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Ritu loved watching stars since her childhood. Who would have ever guessed then that her passion would virtually take her to stars and space through such a prestige mission in her future? Today her name has eched its fame in the world of astronomy and ISRO.

Ritu has done her graduation in physics from Lucknow University and completed her Masters degree from Indian Institute of Science. She obtained a degree in Aerospace Sciences and then joined the ISRO.She was offered the job at Indian Space Research Organization, Bengaluru in 1997. It was a tough decision, but a full hand support from her parents allowed her to pursue her dreams.

A marriage or motherhood did not stop her journey towards her dreams at any point in her life. With a supporting husband, children and extended family, today, Ritu has lived her dream of being the operational mind behind a successful space mission that the world will talk for generations to come.

Where on one hand our country still believes that Motherhood is a priority over career or motherhood could become a hurdle in chasing career, Ritu has proved that women are capable of soaring skies and conquering world if they have the right support at the right time.Motherhood is just another feather in their cap.
