Billion people worldwide have hypertension ,1 in4 men and 1 in5 women have hypertension and is one of the major cause of premature death worldwide as per World Health Organization. The data published on 2019 from the American Heart Association (AHA) show that, hypertension is one of the biggest contributor to the global burden of disease. In every major developed country and most emerging countries the most common health problem is Cardiovascular disease (CVD), cause by Hypertension and is one of the leading cause of death in both men and women.

So what is hypertension?

Hypertension is when blood pressure in your body is too high. Blood pressure or (BP) is the pressure of circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels. Blood pressure reading is usually written in two number (systolic) and bottom number (diastolic). Normal blood pressure for a person is less than 120 over 80 (120/80). If your systolic blood pressure reaches between 130 and 139 mm Hg, or if your diastolic blood pressure reaches between 80 and 89 mm Hg. This is considered stage 1 hypertension.

Hypertension in Women

Few forms of hypertension which occurs commonly in women are hypertension related to menopause, oral contraceptives (COCs) or during their pregnancy (e.g., chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia or eclampsia) etc .

As we know that the menstrual cycle is regulated by various interaction of hormones like luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. During menopausal period the alterations in estrogen and progesterone causes Blood pressure in women. There was a study done in United Kingdom, in which they monitored the Blood pressure for diagnosis of hypertension in 100 women with different age and weight and found that the hypertension is more in women post-menopausal than that is in pre-menopausal period.

Hypertension is more common among women taking oral contraceptives. Most of these oral contraceptive pills have up to 35 micrograms or less of estrogen. These contemporary dosages of estorgen causes high blood pressure and increase the risk of hypertensions among women.

High blood pressure is most common during pregnancy. The types of high blood pressure conditions before, during, and after pregnancy.
Chronic Hypertension- usually occurs before pregnancy or before 20 weeks of gestation.
Gestational Hypertension -diagnosed after 20 weeks of gestation or close to delivery.
Preeclampsia/Eclampsia- usually begins after 20th week of pregnancy and in some cases occurs after the 34th week of gestation and some can occur during the days following birth. Preeclampsia can progress to eclampsia which cause seizures in woman. 

Awareness and control

People with hypertension sometimes also experience negative emotions which effects their mental health and the result is anxiety and depression. This negative emotion might be due effect of raised blood pressure; side effects of medicines etc.

Hypertension awareness, increased treatment and control rate have improved substantially in high income countries since 1990’s but still healthcare providers needs to pay attention in developing various assessment and intervention program, designed to improve public awareness and management of hypertension. Those people who are aware of their hypertension in general have a healthier lifestyle than those that are unaware of hypertension. In order to lower the blood pressure, and the best thing you can do is to make lifestyle modifications. You can also start a healthier diet, quit smoking, learn some relaxation techniques, try to get enough sleep, eat meals without salt, start reading nutrition labels, connect with people etc., Medication depends on the individual and their underlying medical conditions.
